Project Overview: I've been searching for an interesting vintage (or new, but antiquated) door for a wine closet that is situated at the bottom of a set of stairs in a new craftsman-style home. Because the stairs lead to a basement media room, the foot-traffic is high. As a result, I'd like to make the wine closet door a fascinating focal point for my visitors to see as they descend to the media room.
I began my search with the idea that a vintage door or gate would be the perfect answer to creating this special focal point. Because I had specific size parameters I had to work with, the search for this unique door was not going to be as easy as I thought. I did find a few great looking old doors on several architectural salvage websites, but the sizes just wouldn't fit within the existing framing, which called for a 2'-8" wide by 7'-0" high door, and I didn't want to go to the expense of reframing.
I did stumble upon an
old painted entry gate that could be an exciting possibility and is almost the right size...perhaps with a little manipulating it could work. I also thought I'd better have a back up plan, so I continued my search for more conventional options, ones that still offered more style than just a standard door. I looked at glass doors with
decorative iron grills, ones with leaded glass, and more with beveled glass. I think I have it narrowed down to two choices...I'm really hoping the vintage gate will work out.
