Just like any room or area of the home, fireplaces can become outdated and tired. Since it's a focal point in many homes, it's important to maintain it to ensure a clean and eye catching area. Completely Rebuild. Unless you have disassembled and rebuilt fireplaces before, it's best to hire a mason to do the dirty work and install a new one. Starting from scratch is a huge project and will require a lot of patience with the need and hassle of contractors. Be sure to select a custom model that will add to the house, and will compliment your furniture and design. Though rebuilding the fireplace entirely can cost a pretty penny, it can also be a great investment as it could increase your house's worth. Fixing a few. If you've only got a few damaged bricks or cracks, a simple replacement will do the trick. Though it may seem easy, go ahead and hire a specialist to do the replacing. More often than not, if you don't know what you're doing, you'll end up doing more damage than you started with. Cosmetic Upgrade. If it's not a structural problem, chances are you can fix it yourself. If it's the look of the bricks that are outdated, the cheapest, easiest and most fun improvement would be to simply paint over them. These days there are an assortment of choices when it comes to fireplace paint that will modernize your fireplace in no time. Consider buying a fireplace brick paint kit and enjoy your weekend with this fun DIY project. If you have wooden panels, repaint them to cover chips and scratches. If you don't have one yet, perhaps consider installing a mantel. You can place art or pictures on or above it; it'll bring more attention to the fireplace. Colors. It's important to have your fireplace match the rest of your house or at least your room's floors and walls. If you choose a light color, it can create an illusion of a bigger space and can complement natural light, so consider a light tone for your mantel and surrounding areas.
