If you were to add up all the money you've wasted on spoiled fruits, veggies, meats, breads, and other food perishables this month, how much do you think it would add up to? $50? $100?

If you're like me and my family, I can bet you it's much more than we imagine!

It's time to stop wasting...food and money! Use these tips to stretch your dollar and keep your groceries fresher longer.

  • Keep refrigerators at 40 degrees F or lower and freezers between five and zero degrees F. Check your refrigerator's temperature often to make sure it's running at the proper temps.

  • Don't pack your refrigerator to full-capacity. The cold air needs to be able to circulate freely to keep foods cold and fresh.

  • Store fruits and veggies separately. Some produce naturally emit ethylene, a harmless gas that quickly ripens other produce near by.

  • Keep tomatoes at room temperature to maintain their flavor and texture.

  • Always wash produce just before eating it, not before – moisture promotes spoilage.

  • Freeze bread to preserve it longer.
