Last week I wrote about what a realistic kitchen remodeling budget should be. Now you are probably wondering how much you should spend on cabinets, countertops, appliances, and other items that go into a successful kitchen remodel. It’s true that your kitchen cabinetry will take up a big part of your budget, and this is definitely an area where it makes sense to invest since cabinets are the back bone of the kitchen.

Here are some general guidelines on how to allocate your kitchen remodeling budget:

  • Cabinetry & Countertops - 50%
  • Labor, Design & Permits - 35%
  • Appliances, Fixtures and other goods - 15%

How much you actually spend on the different items will depend on your priorities and willingness to compromise. If you’ve been longing for that professional gas range or that built-in refrigerator then you may have to adjust your spending in other areas. Also if you are moving walls and plumbing, or replacing windows you will probably have more labor costs than if you are simply replacing cabinets and countertops.

A design professional is well worth their fee since their insight and experience can help you allocate your budget according to your wish list and priorities, as well as help you avoid costly mistakes. Read more on hiring a designer.
