Begonias are gorgeous flowers that is highly versatile. You'll see them in garden beds, hanging plants, and even indoors. Depending on the type, most flowers are red, pink, white or of yellow varieties; begonias can usually be distinguished by a yellow center. With over 1500+ species, you'll be sure to find begonias to fit your home and personal taste perfectly. Looking to plant some? Here are some tips.
Lighting. For indoor begonias, the best lighting is one that you have most control over, so florescent would be a good choice.
The first consideration is where exactly are the begonias going to live. The plants should be exposed to the light for at least 14 hours a day, and the tubes should just be a few inches above the tallest plant. For natural light, begonias will probably grow fine in any window, however; with different light intensity in different locations and months, it's safest to keep the plant in a south facing window. If you can, experiment with it. If your plants are stretching, they need more light, and if they are stunted, place them farther from the window.
Watering and Mixes. Begonias are sensitive when it comes to potting and watering. It's safer to under-pot, as begonias can easily die with too much soil. If you plan on using a combination of mixes, it's best to use a peat mix so that it drains well but keeps enough moisture. As far as potting goes, a self-watering pot works well with begonias, especially when using peat mix. Before refilling the reservoir again, allow your mix to dry out slightly. Most begonias will also grow well using wick watering such as is used for African violets.
Humidity. Though begonias don't like to be drowning in watered soil, they thrive in humidity in the air. For indoor plants, humidity can be achieved by simply misting the plants daily, or using a humidifier. Be careful if you're using florescent lights, as the warm lights can cause the air to dry faster. To prevent this, use a non-flammable plastic tent to cover the plant and spray mist.
