Types of Microwaves

The basic types of microwaves include:

Countertop Microwaves
Typically more compact than built-in microwaves, countertop microwaves come in the widest selection of sizes, capacities, and power capabilities, as well as price ranges, so you're sure to find one that suits your needs and budget. If you have countertop space to spare, these are a great choice - no installation necessary, just plug it in to any standard outlet. Another consideration is they can be easily moved allowing you to take the unit with you when moving to a new home or apartment.

Built-In Microwaves
Built-in microwaves mount underneath a cabinet or counter or over a range and are often paired with an appliance set. They can also be installed into a wall for convenient operation. Built-ins are more expensive than countertop models, but an ideal solution for a modern kitchen.

Over-the-Range Microwaves (OTR)
Considered a built-in microwave, OTR microwaves are installed over a range to also provide ventilation and lighting, making then a great space saver. Also called Microwave/Hood combos, they free up countertop space while providing ventilation for ranges and cooktops.

A microwave/hood combination can be installed as either vented or non-vented. Vented hood installations exhaust to the outside; non-vented installations recirculate air back into the kitchen after it passes through a charcoal filter. While most hoods are quite easy to install, a non-vented hood does not require an exhaust, so installation is even simpler.

Microwave Drawers
A newer option, and also considered a built-in, a microwave drawer is a microwave oven that fits below the counter and opens like a drawer. It's small and expensive, and appropriate for folks who don't want to lift foods up to the microwave - something else you should consider when placing a microwave.
