Many folks think of trash compactors as an unnecessary appliance but if you hate taking out the garbage then a trash compactor may be exactly what you need. A trash compactor can reduce the bulk of your trash by almost 75% resulting in fewer trips to the outside trash and they are much smaller and less obtrusive than a big, bulky garbage can taking up space in your kitchen.
Trash Compactor Size and Power
Most trash compactors come 12” or 15” wide and are typically 24” deep and 34” – 35” high. Exact measurements will vary by manufacturer and model so it’s important to measure your space carefully before shopping. If you are designing a new kitchen then you can pick your model first and incorporate it into your new design. Compactor capacities are typically 1.4 cubic feet.
The power of trash compactors or the compacting force is measured in pounds and can vary from 2000 to 5000 lbs. depending on the model. If you want to compact plastic bottles and cans, you should consider a model with 5000 pounds of force. Lower-power models will not be able to crush sturdier objects. Portable and obviously manual models are not nearly as powerful as electric models and will not give the same results.
Types of Trash Compactors
There are several types of trash compactors available:
Free-standing Trash Compactor - Free-standing compactors have a finished top for additional counter or storage space. These models are great for in a pantry or garage.
Built-in Trash Compactors - Built-in trash compactors do not have finished tops and are usually installed under the countertop between cabinets. Most models can accept a custom panel that matches the surrounding cabinetry.
Convertible Trash Compactors - Convertible trash compactors have the flexibility to be installed as a freestanding or under-the-counter compactor.
Manual Trash Compactors - Manual trash compactors are portable and compact making them ideal for boats and RV’s. They are quiet and inexpensive, but they don’t have the power of electric compactors.
Safety Features
It’s important to keep safety in mind when using trash compactors. Look for compactors with safety features such as anti-jam system, tilt sensors, and removable knob controls which prevent accidental operation - especially good for households with children. Also, NEVER place poisonous, flammable, or explosive chemicals or aerosol cans into a trash compactor. To avoid back injury keep in mind that a full trash compactor bag can way up to 50 pounds so never fill the bag more than you can safely lift. If you are compacting glass in your trash compactor, be very carefully when taking the bag out because glass splinters could pierce through the bag. It’s best to wear thick gloves and carry the bag away from the body to avoid being cut.
Other Useful Features to Consider
- Built-in Air Fresheners or Charcoal Filters - helps prevent and combat unpleasant odors.
- Noise Insulation - helps keep the noise of the compacting unit down.
- Tilting Trash Baskets - makes for much easier clean up.
- Toe-Bar Opener or Foot Pedal - great for hands-free opening.
- Reversible Door Panels -helps match the trash compactor to your kitchen's decor.
