Microwave Oven Costs Considerations and Maintenance

The basic countertop microwave costs as little as $50, but spending $150 to $250 can get you a countertop microwave with plenty of features. If you prefer convection cooking on your countertop microwave, you'll pay $350 or more.

Over-the-range microwave/hood combos can cost $150 to $1,500 with higher-priced models offering higher CFM blowers and convection or speedcook options.

Built-in microwaves start around $500 and go as high as $1,800 or more depending on features.

There are not many choices when it comes to the microwave drawers, and there are only a handful of manufacturers that make them - they cost $750 to $1,200 or more.

As for maintenance, most new microwaves will provide years of repair-free service. However, it's important to choose a model with a strong warranty; look for models that are easy to keep clean and maintain on a daily basis.

Consider a microwave with a non-stick interior coating - it saves time cleaning up spills and doesn't require special wipes for the interior. This is especially helpful if your microwave is used frequently or if you have children using the oven. Non-stick surfaces makes daily clean-up faster and easier.

Grease filters can be removed for easy cleaning. Some are dishwasher-safe making daily maintenance that much easier. They also help keep your kitchen free of odors and smelling fresher. Most models also include a dishwasher safe, removable turntable for easy cleaning and maintenance.
