Maintaining Your New Washer and Dryer

Your new washer and dryer may be under warranty but it’s still important to do some basic maintenance to keep your new machine running at peak performance.

Basic Tips for Maintaining your Washer:

  • New hoses should be installed with every new washer; they should be periodically checked for imperfections as well and replaced every 5 years. This ensures there will be no flooding in your home from a broken hose.

  • Clean lint filters or catch-pots every six months.

  • Especially for front-load washers, leave the door ajar so the unit can dry out preventing mold and mildew build up.

  • Door seals should be replaced if they feel sticky or tacky; not replacing them will eventually allow water to leak through.

  • If you plan to be away for an extended period of time, turn off the water to the washer, this relieves the constant pressure on the hoses and prevents leaks that may cause a flood.

Basic Tips for Maintaining your Dryer:

  • Clean the lint screen/filter after each load. If you use dryer sheets or fabric softeners you should wash the filter on a regular basis to prevent chemical buildup that prevent the filter from working properly

  • Periodically check the outside dryer vent and vent hose to ensure it's not blocked.

  • Use a damp cloth to clean the inside of the dryer which can also have a buildup of dirt or lint.

  • If you own a gas dryer, keeping the area clean from lint is more important than ever as a dangerous buildup could cause a fire. Inspect the burner unit on the dryer, making sure to keep it clean and free from debris and lint.

Warranties and Repairs

Manufacturers’ warranties are usually good for one year from the date of purchase for parts and labor. You can also buy extended warranties but if you do some basic maintenance, your machines should last you a long time.

If your laundry machines need repair, usually the manufacturer requires the repairs to be completed by a designated service provider, so be sure to call the toll free number provided in your warranty documents.
