This Halloween, little ghosts and goblins will go trick-or-treating and often come home with candy not only in their bags, but unfortunately on their costumes too. But have no fear, you can trick and treat your children’s costume stains.
Whirlpool’s Institute of Fabric Science, an informational hub for everything laundry, helps make stain removal a cinch. First rule of thumb, read the care label. After that, follow the instructions below. Happy Haunting!
- Candy Apple
- Rinse in warm water to dilute the stain.
- Rub liquid detergent into the stain, and then wash in the warmest water safe for the costume.
- If necessary, follow-up with a wash in color-safe bleach or liquid chlorine bleach.
- Air dry and check for any remaining stain.
- Repeat if necessary before drying.
- Chocolate
- Rub liquid detergent into the stain, and then wash in the warmest water safe for the costume
- If necessary, follow-up with a soak in a mixture of detergent and water, then rewash.
- Air dry and check for any remaining stain.
- Repeat if necessary before drying.
- Face Paint
- Use the makeup remover recommended by the makeup manufacturer or rub liquid detergent into the stain and allow to work for up to 30 minutes.
- Wash in hottest water safe for the garment.
- If necessary, follow-up with a wash in color-safe bleach or liquid chlorine bleach.
- Air dry and check for any remaining stain.
- Repeat if necessary before drying.
