Of course the most energy efficient type of kitchen ventilation would be to open a window but only when your heating and air conditioning aren’t on. But is this really effective in capturing all those cooking vapors and gases?
The answer is no. Here are some tips on how to be energy conscious when it comes to ventilating your kitchen.
- Properly locate and size your hood for maximum effectiveness thus reducing the amount of electricity used.
- Look for fans or blowers with multiple speeds so you can use lower speeds for lighter cooking.
- Consider the type of lighting your vent hood comes with. Those with compact fluorescent bulbs are the most efficient and the light quality is reasonably good. Halogen bulbs are not as energy-efficient, but produce a very white light that's easy to work under and they are dimmable allowing you to adjust the light to what you need.
- Clean or replace filters in order to keep your vent hood working efficiently. Check your owner’s manual for instructions and how often this should be done.

Maintenance Tips
Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on maintaining your vent hood.
- Clean enamel hoods by wiping down the interior and exterior of the hood with a soft cloth and warm water. No abrasive cleaners please – you will scratch the enamel.
- Stainless steel hoods should be washed regularly with a soft cloth, warm water, and mild dish detergent. Again –no abrasive cleaners should be used. Wipe in the direction of the polish lines, rinsed well with clear water, and dry immediately; a light coat of mineral oil may also be used.
- Copper or brass hoods may develop a patina over time. If this oxidized or tarnished look is not for you, polish your hood using a copper or brass cleaner.
- Wood hoods should be treated the same as your wood cabinetry. Use a soft clean cloth to wipe away dirt and dust from the surface. For stubborn grime – use a wood cleaner such as Murphy Oil Soap – follow their instructions and be sure to dry the surface immediately.
- Clean the interior of the range hood with a standard household degreaser/cleaner.
- Clean the grease trap/cup by soaking it in a degreasing solution until all the grease is dissolved and then washing it with warm, soapy water.
- Aluminum mesh filters can be washed in the dishwasher at least once a month, depending on use. Baffle filters can be cleaned with soap and water when they start to look unsightly.
- On some units, blowers are removable and can be cleaned in the dishwasher.
