Greening Your Laundry

With the increased emphasis on conservation, consumers are looking for simple changes in their daily routines that can help decrease their impact on the environment and most importantly, save money. Eco-consciousness is catching on -- according to a recent Whirlpool brand survey, 56 percent of consumers said that wasting water and energy is their biggest laundry fear, while 59 percent said water and energy savings are the top two factors when considering the purchase of a washing machine. Home appliance efficiency plays an important role in reducing household emissions, conserving resources and cutting energy costs. While purchasing ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances can save consumers up to hundreds of dollars year, a few simple household habits can help stretch the dollar and conserve water and energy. The Whirlpool Institute of Fabric Science, recommends the following quick tips for energy and water efficiency in the laundry room.
  • When separating loads, organize by fabric type. Washing and drying similar fabric types together ensures even drying and reduces the amount of time needed in the dryer.
  • If possible, wash full loads. By simply washing a full load, consumers can save 3,400 gallons of water annually. When rinsing clothes, use cold water. Warm and hot water require more energy for heating.
  • While it is important to dry full loads, do not overload the dryer. Air circulation is important to ensure items dry thoroughly. Take advantage of the leftover heat in the dryer and dry a few loads in succession.
  • Clean the dryer lint trap after each load to maintain proper ventilation and heating. This easy task can save consumers $34 annually. Go one step further and regularly keep the dryer’s outside exhaust clean. A clogged exhaust lengthens drying time and increases energy use.
