Fans are a wonderful way to keep your home cool during the hot summer months and can be used in conjunction with traditional air conditioners for optimum cooling.
They come in all shapes and sizes: portable fans, ceiling fans, whole-house fans, evaporative coolers - deciding which is best for your home depends on your needs, most notably, where you live.
- Portable fans are just that - portable; they can be in the form of table fans, window fans, floor fans, etc.
- Ceiling fans are fans attached to ceilings. They are fantastic at circulating air throughout a room and most can switch the direction of their fans pulling air up vs. pushing air down.
- Whole-house fans are fans installed in ceilings or attics that pull hot air out of a room and into the attic creating a positive pressure flow through the house; they work best when temperatures outside a home are slightly cooler than in the home.
- Evaporative coolers, or swamp coolers, cool homes through evaporation - fresh air from outside is pulled through pads moisted with water and circulated through the home by a fan.
