When looking for rugs to layer over your floor, use the following tips:
- Contrast the intensity of your floor color with your walls for visual interest. For example, if you have darker walls, choose a lighter floor and vice versa. If you have dark walls and dark floors, use a lighter area rug to provide contrast and visual relief.
- If you're covering an entire room with one area rug, leave a consistent border of exposed floor around the room of approximately 12" to 18".
- Create the perfectly sized area rug by having regular broadloom carpeting cut and bound to size.
- If you love oriental carpets, but can’t afford one to cover your entire room, anchor the seating area with a smaller oriental rug layered over a larger, neutral background rug such as a seagrass or sisal rug.
- The lighter the floor, the larger the room will look, and dark-colored floors are beautiful, but tend to show every speck of dust.
