If you want to save money and be environmentally conscious, you will want to look for dishwashers with the “Energy Star” label. Energy Star is a joint program with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency which certifies that appliances are energy efficient.
Energy Star qualified dishwashers are approximately 10% more energy efficient than non qualifying models. They are also 12% more efficient when it comes to water consumption. So, by buying an Energy Star dishwasher you are reducing your carbon footprint and helping to protect our water resources.
Here is a list of energy saving features and tips for your dishwasher:
- When shopping, look for the yellow EnergyGuide label indicating the dishwasher is an Energy Star qualified appliance. Look on the label for dishwashers that use less than 340 kWh per year for the most energy efficiency.
- Choose the right size dishwasher for your needs.
- Choose a model with different wash cycles such as a light or energy saving cycle. The more cycles, the more you can tailor your energy and water use per load.
- Don’t run your dishwasher half full – load it up!
- Choose a model with an air dry feature to save energy.
- Scrape dishes but don’t rinse. Today’s dishwashers are designed to do the cleaning. If you don’ t run the dishwasher right away you can use your dishwasher’s rinse cycle which uses much less water than hand rinsing.
