Dishwasher Buying Guide - Types of Dishwashers
When buying your next dishwasher you will have some choices to make when it comes to style or type of dishwasher. There are four basic styles or types of dishwashers, each with their own unique advantages.
Built-in Dishwashers

Built-in dishwashers are the most common type of dishwasher and come in both the standard 24” and compact 18” sizes. These models fit directly under your kitchen counter, saving precious floor space. They require power and water connections and are available in many price points so there is something out there for everyone.
Most built-in dishwashers are available in a variety of finishes including white, black and stainless steel. Some models even have the ability to accept custom panels allowing them to blend seamlessly with your cabinetry.
Dishwasher Drawers
Also considered built-in, dishwasher drawers are one of the latest trends in dishwashers. These models are usually two drawers stacked on top of each other, however they can also be installed as single units too.
Dishwasher drawers offer a great deal of flexibility. Since the drawers are independently controlled you can save time and energy by doing two different types of washing at once. For example, you can have a heavy-duty cycle running in one drawer while a quick wash cycle is running in the other drawer. Dishwasher drawers can also be run separately making them great for smaller loads.
Portable Dishwashers
Portable Dishwashers are a great solution when you don’t already have a designated under counter space for a dishwasher in your kitchen. These models operate by connecting a hose that is stored on the back of the unit to your kitchen faucet to access water and then plugging it in to a standard electrical outlet.
Most come with casters that allow them to be easily moved and stored away when not in use. Some models can even be converted to built-in with the help of a conversion kit.
Portable dishwashers are available in both 18” and 24” widths and are also available with several different wash cycles.
Countertop Dishwashers
When space is at an absolute premium and even a portable dishwasher won’t fit…there is always the countertop dishwasher. With a size similar to a countertop microwave, these compact dishwashers are great for small apartments, boats and RVs. They operate by connecting a hose to your sink faucet and plugging in to any standard outlet.
The capacity of most countertop dishwashers is four place settings and most come with multiple wash cycles. Typically they come with one or two spray arms - two spray arms will clean more thoroughly but will also be more expensive.
Many models even come with special features often found on full size dishwashers such as digital controls, delayed start options and even sanitary wash cycles that boost water temperature to eliminate germs and bacteria.
You may be thinking – if it’s only 4 place settings, I could just do them by hand – but countertop dishwashers actually use less water per load than hand washing.
