If you are in the market for a new dishwasher, a lot of things have probably changed since you last went shopping. Dishwashers are not just dish-washers anymore…they are plate warmers, sanitizers, and even disposals.

Today, dishwashers come in many shapes and sizes so before you begin shopping, you should take into consideration the space you have available and what size or capacity you need.

Space

Like any appliance, when shopping for a dishwasher, you must consider the space you have available. If you are designing a new kitchen you clearly will have more flexibility when it comes to selecting your new dishwasher but if you are replacing an existing dishwasher then knowing the space you have available is critical.

Although most dishwashers are usually a standard size it is still very important that you measure the width, depth and height of the opening you have to avoid any surprises. Also, if you have an island or other obstacle in front of the dishwasher, be sure to measure the distance between the dishwasher cabinet and the objects in front of it to confirm that there is enough clearance to open the dishwasher door.

Other things to make note of when replacing an existing dishwasher are the locations of drains and water lines to make sure the new dishwasher you select is compatible with your existing conditions.

Size or Capacity

It’s important to select the right size dishwasher for your needs so you don’t waste time, money and energy running multiple loads or half full loads. When determining the size or capacity of your new dishwasher you will want to consider the size of your family and the types of dishes you want to wash.

Dishwasher capacity is generally measured by the number of place settings a unit can hold. Most standard size dishwashers hold up to twelve place settings which is, typically, plenty of space for a family of four or five…even leaving room for pots and pans.

If you need more washing power, consider the super capacity models which can hold up to sixteen place settings and often have taller interior clearances which can fit odd shaped items as well as larger pots and pans.

If your washing needs are not so grand or you are looking for a secondary dishwasher, a compact model might be just the ticket. Compact dishwashers are typically 18 inches wide and hold up to eight place settings. The new drawer style dishwashers are also great for smaller loads.

The design of the dishwasher interiors should also be taken into consideration when selecting the size of your new dishwasher. The location of the spray arms and towers can affect how you load dishes. You don’t want to overload your dishwasher or load the dishes in a way that blocks the spray of the water because they won’t get clean, so keep that in mind. Fortunately, many dishwashers today have eliminated the central spray tower in favor of more direct spray systems.

Also, be sure to pay attention to the design of the loading racks especially if you have odd sized or shaped dishes or plan on washing a lot of baking pans and cookie sheets. Many dishwashers come with adjustable racks as well as fold down shelves, and removable baskets providing a greater, more flexible use of space.
