If you are looking to cut your energy costs by more than a third, and your water costs by more than half you will want to buy a washer with the “Energy Star” label. Energy Star qualified washers use next generation technology that dramatically reduces the amount of water and energy used in a wash cycle without compromising performance.

A whopping 95% of energy used in a wash cycle goes to heating, but today, better, more specialized wash cycles mean clothes get as clean in cold water as they once did in only hot water. And less energy is spent on drying times because of more efficient motors that spin clothes two to three times faster in the spin cycle thus extracting more water.

Although, dryers currently are not available with the Energy Star label primarily because there is little difference in energy use between models, there are still ways to be energy efficient when it comes to drying your clothes. Much of the potential efficiency is related to how you use your dryer, for example, try not to over-dry your clothes, and remember to clean out the lint filter after every use. There also some new energy saving features being offered such as sensors that can detect when clothes are dry and then shuts off the dryer.

As mentioned above, be sure to get a washer with higher speed spin cycles that significantly reduce the amount of water left in the clothes, resulting in shorter drying times. Also, look for models that have multiple level heating options so you can select lower heat when appropriate. Finally, gas models are known for being more energy efficient than electrical dryers.

These high efficiency washers and dryers do tend to be more expensive to purchase, but in the long run, you will save money on your energy and water bills, while helping the environment. Also, many energy star labeled appliances qualify for cash rebates so be sure to check with your locally utility company to see if your new washer qualifies.
